A Website by Jessica Withey
I am a 2013 graduate of Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa that studied Biochemistry and Sociology, with a concentration in Pre-Medicine. Throughout my time at Loras, I researched and analyzed the differences in Breast and Prostate Cancer and how they are portrayed by the past and present society. My research has come from talking to physicians, physician assistants, nurses, books: Karen. M Kedrowski's and Marilyn Stine Sarow's Cancer Activism: Gender, Media, and Public Policy, Jackie Stacey's Teratologies: A Cultural Study of Cancer, and Barabara Enrenreich's Bright-Sided, and medical journals.
I designed this website for an independent Sociology class during college. I decided to look into the medical field of Oncology because I am passionate on becoming a doctor so that I can continue to make a difference in the lives of individuals and in the world around me. I was inspired to make this website as cancer has been a dear part of my life for many years. After losing many family members and watching my best friend go through cancer, I have been motivated to go into this field; with an addition in psychiatry specializing in cancer therapy. My inspiration grew even more after my job shadowing experiences, my involvement in Dance Marathon, and my summer in Eustis, Florida as a counselor at Camp Boggy Creek.
Camp Boggy Creek is a not-for-profit residential camp for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. It is my dream to let every child forget what they have and allow them to receive the childhood that they never fully got to enjoy, since it was interrupted by their diagnosis.

If you click on the button above, you can find the camp's website. Below is a reflective journal from one of my two summers spent at camp, which has been the best experience and six months of my life. It was this camp that has expanded my goal not just to seek the oncology field, but to return back to Camp Boggy Creek as a pysician to give back and continue to volunteer at a place that has become my home away from home.
